PARENTS / COACHES

PARENTS

Parents can play many roles in sport: current or former athlete, coach, fan, motivator, role model or critic. A few studies have shown that family members may influence an athlete’s involvement and achievement in sport more than coaches. Parents also are the first and most critical agents at socializing sports.  Here are some things you may find useful to have fun at Northeast Little League:

Program Fees

Schedules

UNIFORMS:  Your registration fee includes a jersey and hat.  You will need to purchase pants, belt and socks.  The color of those items is determined by your assigned coach.

EQUIPMENT:  Your player needs a glove and a helmet.  Minor A players need a helmet with a mask/cage on the front.  The league will supply bats, tees, catcher's equipment and baseballs.

TRYOUTS/DRAFTS:  All Minor and Majors divisions work from a draft format.  The kids tryout just so the coaches can see the talent/skills leading up to the draft.  Every kid make a team.  The draft helps us to balance the talent across all teams to ensure competitive play, a good learning environment and a positive experience.

**We encourage our parents to work with the coach and/or player agents to work through issues.  If a formal complaint is necessary, please submit here and the appropriate board member will respond to you.**

COACHES

Coaching Little League is fun, rewarding and a great way to spend time with your kids!  Here are a few details that will make your time at NELL enjoyable:

  • Every coach will go through a background check.
  • Every coach needs to know the NELL Local Rules.
  • The league will hold a tryout for all divisions and conduct a draft where the coaches will pick their team members.  The league will also host a coach's meeting to explain the rules for each division, team staff roles and how to run practice effectively.
  • PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL RULES:  The Little League® Rulebook App contains the Official Regulations, Playing Rules, and Operating Policies for all divisions of Baseball, Softball, and Challenger in one easy-to-use location. The app includes automatic updates for future seasons after a one-time download of $1.99. Download on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

COACHES FAQ
How many coaches are there per team?

In most cases there is 1 team manager and 2 team coaches.

How can I become a coach?

Register to coach in your chosen division during online Registration.

Do I need experience to coach at NELL? Will I receive training?

No experience is necessary to become a coach at NELL. In fact, we rely on new coaches each season, especially in the younger divisions. Every season NELL hosts a Coaches Clinic at their fields to help new and experienced coaches alike. If you have any further questions around coaching, please feel free to email our coaching coordinator ([email protected]).

How much time is involved in coaching a team?

Managers and coaches will have 2 games and 1 practice per week, which total about 7-8 hours per week when pre-game time is factored in. Additionally, there will be another couple hours per week for prep time, especially at the beginning of the season. Experienced coaches and our Coaching Coordinator are happy to help in the planning phases to ease the transition for newer coaches.

How does the draft work?

Tryouts are held for each age group. Each manager and coach evaluates every player. A draft is coordinated by the VP of Baseball and each division’s Player Agent where each team is selected by the manager and coach.
